Can Tai Chi help Breast Cancer survivors?

I suppose the first question many of you will have is what is Tai Chi and why should anyone do it?  Well, you might have seen people in a park doing martial art type movements in a very slow and deliberate fashion almost as if it were a kind of dance.  Tai Chi involves deep breathing and meditation.  If you haven’t noticed I am a big fan of both deep breathing and meditation since they are both great stress relievers.

A recent study done by the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), tested blood samples from 90 participants ranging in age from 30-85.  The samples were taken before and after the participants took part in a Tai Chi program.  Lead researcher Dr. Michael Irwin believes that Tai Chi was able to lower inflammation in breast cancer patients who were also dealing with insomnia.  Breast cancer patients are also 3 times more likely to suffer from insomnia.   According to Irwin, Tai Chi is able to reduce inflammation by relaxing the practitioner’s body.  The study was published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

Other studies have shown that Tai Chi being a very beneficial form of exercise for people with ailments as well.  Tai may be able to help with: Heart disease, fibromyalgia and other conditions.  If you would like more information on how to better manage your health please do not hesitate to give our office a call.
