Probiotics and losing weight


Can Probiotics really help you lose weight?
It’s considered to be a friendly bacteria. Foods containing probiotics like yogurt and probiotic supplements have gotten a lot of mileage off promoting it as a way to lose weight. Many of these marketers are claiming that it is more of a natural way to lose weight. Marketers of these supplements say overweight people can correct bacterial imbalances that could possibly lead to weight gain and help these people start losing weight.
The questions is can these claims be backed by any studies? According to a study published in the British Journal of Nutrition, researchers from Laval University in Quebec had 125 overweight men and women follow a 12-week-loss diet. Half of the participants took probiotic pills while the other half took placebo pills. The women that took the probiotic pills lost 9.7 pounds on average while the women on the placebo pills only lost 5.7 pounds. By the end of the study they also found that the women who had been taking the probiotic pills had less intestinal bacteria relating to obesity in their bodies. The results also found that probiotics had little impact on helping men lose weight.
That’s interesting enough, but before you go running out to your local GNC to purchase some probiotics I suggest try including the following foods that will increase the intake of probiotics in your diet:
* Yogurt
* Kefir
* Kimchi
* Miso

Again, I would stress working with a health professional to track the results of your efforts and see if probiotics might actually work for you.
