Finding a job is hard work.  It takes time and consistency.

  1. The Resume is the First Step

An impressive resume and cover letter is a first step.  It needs to be perfect with no typos.  You may think this goes without saying but I have seen many sloppy resumes, which shows there was no effort applied. Use a website or template if you need to.  I suggest not using bright colored paper and not be handwritten.  Your resume needs to match the job you are applying for.

Take your time completing the application.  Missing a question or even a section will throw your application out.  Be sure you have the correct information down.  This might mean you may want to create a check list.

Being organized is a must.  If you are applying to several opportunities on a consistent basis then keep a list of the application, their website, the person who you are contacting, and so on.  It would be embarrassing if an employer calls and you do not know who you are talking to.  Just a quick reminder to not apply for every job.  You must meet the requirements and you need to want to do the job.

Follow up on your application.  First, be sure the post does not say anything to the fact that they will contact you.  In this case, you will need to follow their request.  If nothing is said then wait 3 to 5 days to call or email the contact person.   You must be prepared, this could lead to an on the spot phone interview.

  1. Have real conversations with actual Human beings

Are you actually picking up the phone and calling someone?  It’s really easy to get behind a laptop and start firing off your resume to hundreds if not thousands of employers.  The problem with sending off that perfect resume to hundreds if not thousands of employees is that it’s very possible that the key decision maker for your position may never see your resume.  If your email inbox is empty, then maybe it’s time to do something different.  Finding a job is all about selling yourself.  What is so different about you?  What makes you so special?  How are you going to stand out on a piece of paper?  The truth is that you probably aren’t going to be able to.  That’s actually good news because if you are willing to a bit more work than the next person you will get the job you are looking for!

  1. Expand your Network

How are you going to find your dream job then?  It’s all about being able to do things that others do not want to do.  This requires having a lot of conversations with a lot of people about your intention.  You want a job, tell your friends, neighbors, dentist, landscaper, mail carrier, pet sitter, hair stylist, grocery store clerk, etc.  Once people know about your intention then they might also run into someone looking to fill an open position or positions at their company.

You may also reach out to hiring managers and HR people at companies you are looking to work at.  Even if they are not hiring consider setting up informational interviews with them to see if you would be interested in working at their company.  Another idea would be consider donating your time.  If there is a specific field you want, a good rule of thumb is to volunteer somewhere within that field.  Volunteering does count as experience.  It also as the willingness to work and well roundedness.  You can gain references and experience as well.

Ask for help from a job coach/headhunter but more importantly if your intention is get a job or find a better one, it’s important to think of yourself as a social butterfly during this time.

It is best to always be available and flexible.  If shifts need to be filled, then apply for those opportunities even if it is not the shift you want.  It will get your foot in the door.  The shift you want may come available very soon.  If you are looking for a very specific schedule, then expect for your search to take a longer.

Always keep in mind you may not find your dream job immediately but do not be afraid to take a job that could then lead to that dream job.  It may just be a matter of timing, knowledge and experience.
