The Gut Microbiome and the possible link to Sleep Apnea and Hypertension

No one knows for sure what is the correlation between sleep apnea and high blood pressure.  According to researchers though the connection may indeed be found in the gut.  The findings were published in the Journal Hypertension.  The researchers wanted to see was the link with sleep apnea and hypertension because there typically seemed to be a link between the two.  The article cited gut microbiome imbalances known as dysbiosis could be the cause of hypertension.  The Researchers at the Baylor College of Medicine gave rats a high-fat diet and found the rats were not becoming obese but hypertensive.  They also found that the high-fat diet made changes in the gut microbiome.

When healthy rats with healthy microbiomes with no sign of hypertension were given or transplanted with parts of microbiomes that came from the rats on unhealthy or high-fat diets, they ended up with hypertension.

More study certainly needs to be done on this, but more and evidence is piling up showing how important the microbiome is when it comes to long-term health.  This particular study only looked at high-fat diets, but what about microbiomes upset by a diet that had meat injected with hormones and antibiotics?

It’s important to keep all this in mind when dealing with how to plan your diet.  Buying foods that organic and GMO-free in addition to keeping a well-balanced diet.  I always recommend to my patients a Mediterranean diet.   Keep in mind though that are a lot of diets out there and it’s also important to understand what sorts of food sensitives one might have as well.  Some of my patients are allergic to gluten.  What the big deal if you are allergic to a certain food?  Certain food sensitives might be causing gut imbalances that could be impacting your gut barrier integrity which in turn helps keep bacteria and toxins from reaching the rest of your body.

It’s hard to say what one person is sensitive to and what another may have no problem with that sort of food at all.  That’s why it’s important to understand what your body is sensitive to and what foods to avoid.  There are now many ways to understand this.  If you need more help with understanding your food sensitivities, then please call my office for an appointment.
