Two Foods to Eat in the Afternoon @ Work

You know that feeling you get when two or three o’clock in the afternoon rolls around? You start to yawn and look for a snack. That cookie you saw in the breakroom won’t really affect you that much, will it? You’ve been good lately, right? It’s only one cookie, right?

Wrong! Don’t do it. Did you know that when you eat a highly processed food, 20-30 minutes later your body will struggle because of it? Your blood sugar crashes, your cravings start to increase, you start feeling more irritable, more fatigued and you can’t focus.

What you should have done is brought a healthy superfood with you for a snack. One that won’t raise your blood sugar, only to send it crashing and leaving you feeling more unsatisfied than before you ate it. Here are two of my favorite go to superfood snacks.

  1. Almonds

Almonds are the most amazing snack for so many reasons. They are high in fat and protein and are a low glycemic carbohydrate, which means they won’t spike the blood sugar. Almonds are also high in magnesium, which so many of us are deficient in today and can help to make you feel more relaxed in a stressful environment. They are also so convenient. By convenient, I mean I can leave them in my hot car (in a glass container of course), in my work bag, on my desk at work or in the fridge or freeze to keep them fresher, longer. I used to think buying nuts just anywhere was fine, but now I only buy them from Natural Grocers in the freezer. Something about the freshness of those nuts makes a huge difference. You also want to read your labels on nuts. Some of them are produced in facility where other food allergens also exist, so be especially careful if you have a food sensitivity.  Almonds, as well as other assorted nuts, are amazing for you and will allow you to keep that energy you need.

  1. Avocados

We need healthy fats in order to function at a job all day long. According to Dr. Hyman, “60% of our brain is made up of fat.” If you aren’t eating enough of it, your ability to concentrate will suffer. Healthy fats also helps you fight cravings and stay fuller, longer. Consuming foods like avocados, nuts, seeds, avocado oil, olive oil, coconut oil, MCT oil, organic free-range eggs, and wild caught fish on a regular basis can make you feel a whole lot better and keep you energized. I eat my avocados on anything I can, like salads, eggs, chicken, tacos, with Boulder Potato chips (guilt-free, amazing and only 3 ingredients chips sold at Natural Grocers and HyVee) or even plain with a little cayenne pepper and pink himalayan salt. Another great thing about avocados is they are on the clean 15 list, so you don’t have to buy them organic!
