What Health Coach Aaron Howard says about the Power of Community

“The power of community to create health is far greater than any physician, clinic or hospital.”
~ Mark Hyman

Losing weight and keeping it off is, well…tough. Just being honest. We all know people (maybe yourself) that have lost weight, but only gained it all back. There are so many fitness and weight loss plans that boast great results but sadly, these results are unsustainable. There is one key difference between long term changes and temporary improvement and that is…social support.

I’ve noticed that more and more weight loss companies are beginning to realize the need for social support and have incorporated this into their programs. Whether it’s requiring they come to their gym 3 or 4 days a week or regular weigh-ins. There is a reason for this.

When a coach holds you accountable, you are much more likely to follow the plan. When a whole community is making strides toward the same weight loss goal, that goal becomes attainable. Conversely, it is much easier to skip a day of your healthy eating plan or exercising when no one else will even know it happened.

One study showed that women had a significant increase in the chance of losing weight if they had frequent friend and family support. Forming health habits aren’t formed in a vacuum. Social support networks are linked to better health. Get your family, friends and community involved and you’ll enjoy a much higher success rate. If not, it’s easy to just “go with the flow” if your friends or family are going out for pizza or skip a workout and go to happy hour instead.

Positive reinforcement matters when trying to lose weight and become healthier. Find a group of like-minded people and it will make the difference between temporary weight loss and lasting change!

For many people, showing up for exercise classes or weigh-ins may be impractical. With a busy schedule, meeting with a coach regularly just isn’t realistic. Fortunately, there is another model that allows participants to reap all the benefits of an encouraging health coach and community –  an online support community.

Mandala has formed an in-person and online community for fitness, weight loss, and a healthy lifestyle. We have been getting exciting reports from our clients of their successes! Consider joining our social support community as we all move towards greater health!
