According to an article published on Medical News Today, it is common knowledge that the exposure to cadmium (Cd) is harmful to the human body. Cadmium is considered to be a primary cause of many diseases like cancer and heart disorders just to name a few. Smoking is one of the most common sources of cadmium, but another common source are contaminated plant-based foods.
According to a study in the British Journal of Nutrition, researchers have found that organically grown foods are 48 percent lower in Cd than conventionally grown foods. The 48 percent number to me is quite telling and of course, more studies will be done to see if these claims are correct. With that being said, I know many of my patients tell me that going organic is just too expensive. I understand it is a very tough decision. When my son was diagnosed with Autism, the decision for us to switch to organic foods was done with a lot of consideration. I cannot speak for anyone else, but in my case the long term effects of being exposed to Cadmium should give anyone pause. Ignoring the mounting evidence out there about buying more organic foods may indeed be impacting your family’s health overall.
